Editorial: If any one game series encapsulates the new era of the more mature video games which have emerged since the beginning of the PlayStation era, it's Metal Gear Solid. Its complex narrative and equally complex and varied gameplay redefined the way people looked at video games and even if the immediate sequel managed to upset the delicate balance between storytelling and interaction, Metal Gear Solid 3 doesn't look likely to make the same mistake twice.

Taking a real back-to-basics approach, Snake Eater is set in the '60s and sees you controlling Solid Snake (or at least someone that looks like him--and is at least not Raiden from the MGS2) in a storyline that has yet to be fully revealed.

What we've seen of the game shows a much greater emphasis on stealth than ever before, with Snake being vastly outnumbered and appearing to spend most of his time creeping through the jungle, dropping down on guards from out of the trees and hiding in plain sight using a variety of specialised camouflage suits. The sub-title is less nonsensical than you might think as well since Snake must hunt and eat animals--including, you guessed it, our no-legged friends--to keep his stamina up.

Overall the game seems more realistic than ever before (you don't even get the enemy radar to use all the time) and should assuage those jaded by Metal Gear Solid 2's more self-indulgent moments. Snake is back, and he's never looked better... --David Jenkins

5 out of 5  "If you go down to the woods today..." - 28 May 2005
Man the Star Wars prequels suck, Episode III's pretty good to be fair but the first two are rubbish. Know why? There's no need for them. I already know Anakin Skywalker becomes Dath Vader so all of this trade federation and intergalactic politics guff means nothing to me. No I'm not reviewing the wrong thing here, bear with me.

MGS3 is a prequel to the rest of the series. It's the swinging 60s and you take control of the 'Greatest Soldier of the 20th Century TM' - Big Boss (Known at this point as Naked Snake) as he goes deep into enemy territory to rescue a brilliant scientist who wishes to return to America. If you know your Metal Gear then you know that's about as close to the full story as 'Someone's taken over an oil tanker' is to MGS2's plot.

What is fantastic about MGS3 is that it fills out the backstory of the entire Metal Gear series, the origins of Metal Gear, the birth of the Patriots, and the 'turning to the dark side' of Big Boss. If George Lucas had handled Anakin's descent into darkness as well as Hideo Kojima has Big Boss' then he would have sold a whole lot more Lego and Lunchboxes I promise you.

Metal Gear Solid 3 further blurs the line between videogame and film, not by having longer cutscenes or radio conversations but by creating multifaceted characters who's relationships with each other will change what you expect from video games. There are big budget action films who's romantic side plots seem vastly inferior to the one between Snake and EVA, Ocelot's warped love for Snake is endearing and even a little freaky, and the relationship between Snake and The Boss makes playing the final portion of the game as emotionally confusing as a video game can be. So You'll be watching more cutscenes than you would in Mario Sunshine but this is Metal Gear, you want pure gameplay? Timesplitters is fantastic, go get that.

Oh yeah gameplay, if you turn down MGS3 for having a story you're also missing out on a bit of a 'tour de force' as far as gaming goes. Since there's no Radar, the top down camera really comes into it's own, this is far more useful than a 3Dcamera in your current situation believe me. Camoflague also becomes your best friend, there is no greater feeling than watching a gormless russian walk right past your big green face as you lay in the grass with the Camo meter at 100%. The new CQC will have you itching to take down every person you see thanks to it being needlessly cool. Thow, Interrogate, slit throats block moves or hold up guards - you have the skills to pay the bills my mulleted friend. Throw in a few new tricks like using the iron sights on rifles (there's no laser sights in the 60's apparently) and using the D-Pad to stalk and you have the perfect stealth experience.

While the path of the game is fairly linear, save for a few massive areas at some points in the game, Snake Eater invites you to tackle it in any way you want. Wanna fly through and gun anyone down that's in your way? Go ahead. Don't want to get spotted? Get on your belly boy and keep that Camo up. Areas are big enough to give you a choice of how to get to the next point and the inclusion of CQC means that if things all go pear shaped then you have the poewr to brutally slam the soldier's face in the mud. The improvements in AI mean that the enemies can see and hear for miles so it's a good idea to keep an eye out for enemy patrol routes and positions, the best thing you can do is think hard which way you're going to go about this making Metal Gear Solid 3 a really tense experience.

The real neat touches are what sets MGS3 apart though. The Food and Cure systems are pretty well implemented and don't hurt the gameplay since you won't need them too often unless you suck. They also really add to the survival theme of the game. What will blow your mind is that it's not just Snake who gets hungry, destroy that food supply and enemy soldiers will groan with hunger and gobble p anything you throw at them (experiment with the poisonous foods). That Ammo store? Blow it up kid, watch in glee as the enemy's clip runs out and they discard thier weapons to take you on hand to hand (good Luck with that Ivan).

Then there's the real clincher, Boss Fights. The only thing that even comes close to the fights in this game is Resident Evil 4 and even that can't quite match the thrilling duels with MGS3's bad ass special Ops wierdos 'The Cobra Unit'. The pick of the Bunch are a good old fashioned gunfight with Ocelot, a near hour long Sniper duel with the End - a 100 year old man covered in Moss, a Predator style booby trap ridden scrap with Creepiest of them all The Fear and the final fight, a tear jerking, eye kissing send off to an old friend of Snakes.

This all dosn't take into account 'The Chase' which is one of the best setpieces ever created in a game (aim for the guys who are driving)

Music and Voice acting are as good as you'd expect from the series so you'll find yourself humming along to the tunes

5 out of 5  "Back to basics and back to the best" - 6 March 2005
First off, I love the metal gear series, I loved the first one, was disappointed by the second, but finally Kojima has done it, he's made a game better than MGS1. I have been playing this for a few days and I love it. The camouflage system is brilliant; there is nothing more satisfying than changing your clothes to your surroundings and watching your camouflage gauge shoot up. The new close quarter combat is great, if a little fiddly to get to grips with. Also the survival aspect is genius, you have to eat to survive, crocodile, fish, rat, snaaaake! It's up to you. Also the gorgeous location and graphics, plus all the hidden extras and little jokes thrown in.
However its is quite frustrating and you will find yourself repeating sections over and over, as there is no radar this time, and the camera is hard to manoeuvre in all directions, but this just adds to the tension. Throw in what looks to be an amazing story and you've got the game of '05.

5 out of 5  "Sneaking To The Top" - 19 March 2005
If I was to say that this game is good then that would be the understatement of the century. This game is excellent and beats MGS1 and MGS2 by far.

Although there's no radar (meaning that you have to pay attention to your surroundings more) it gives a different angle on the game.

Instead of being in a linear, confined space it gives you an opportunaty to do things your way. Although its no GTA in terms of non-linear, it gives you a chance to choose what route you want to take, and how aggressivly you want to talkle the game. Do you opt for the grass, sneaking around, waiting for the guard to move and go for his walk; or do you down some pentazimin, pull out your sniper rifle and shoot out the enemies radios' before taking out the guards themselve; or do you just run through the scene, shooting everything in sight with your 12 gauge shotgun.

Whatever your style MGS3 is a game not to be missed. The grass moves when you brush past. Accidently step on a twig and the guards will hear. And you may see a snake slither past which, if you want pull out your hunting knife and kill it, using it to build up your stamina later. Change your camoflage to blend in with your surroundings. And with Hideo Kojima taking pops at Raiden (from MGS2) it can be quite humourous.

As with any Metal Gear game (Metal Gear[MSX/NES] Metal Gear 2:Solid Snake[MSX2] Metal Gear Solid[PS1/Gamecube{renamed Twin Snakes on Gamecube}] and Metal Gear Solid 2:Sons Of Liberty[PS2]) it has an amazing plot with some surprising twists

To sum up I would say that this is a game that should be on everyones Christmas list, Birthday list or any other present.

Whoops, time to get back to the jungle

Summery

5 out of 5  "Being there" - 28 April 2005
By the time I finished this game, I realised that what I'd been doing wasn't "playing a game," in the conventional sense. I'd been playing a part in the most interactive movie I could ever imagine. The gameplay and everything else have been well described by other reviewers, but what was so amazing for me about this game is the deep sense of involvement you get with the characters and the storyline. You don't even realise how much, until the end arrives and the things you discover then are shattering. I felt like I'd been totally manipulated by Hideo Kojima and his band of geniuses, in the most satisfying way. When your finger is on the trigger in the field of white flowers, you'll know what I mean. Get this game.

4 out of 5  "snakes don't belong in Alaska" - 6 April 2005
I dropped the one star due to the overly-dramatical "Jimmy Bondesque" theme tune. Jeez louise.....
But I have to confess that this is the only game where upon completion I have started a new game immediately. Without even letting go of the controller! Maybe I just need to get out more. And that's one more reason why it's only getting 4 stars: I begrudge it stealing my life away from me!
Like most MGS fans I found the 2nd installment boring and the cut scenes far too drawn out. But in this latest incarnation I found the animated intervals to be compelling and allowed me to be drawn into the storyline and characters.
It looks fantastic/plays fluidly/is saturated with detail/has loads of hidden items to discover: buy this game!

5 out of 5  "Excellent! Huge Improvement" - 23 March 2005
Comparing this title to the previous MGS titles this is much more realistic and involving than them. It has a few minor faults involving realism at some points, but other than that I can't complain. It's a hell of a hard game (but who doesnt't love a good challenge?) and it helps you slowly peice together the whole story of the "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear Solid" games. To conclude mindblowingly better that the previous title extreemly realistic and involving and a great storyline. Couldn't ask for a better game!

5 out of 5  "Absolutely brilliant" - 5 April 2005
MGS on the ps was a classic in the making, a true gem of a game. The follow up of mgs2 lets the series down with what i think a stupid plot and a very big mistake in only allowing the gamer to play raiden in most of the game instead of snake! mgs3 however, will take ur breathe away. It does howver have many cutscenes just like mgs2 bt they are magnificient and have a purpose to the game. The graphics are breathe taking and the game play is outstanding. The only thing that lets the game down is having no radar, bt if u r a true gamer then this will make things more interesting for you. This game is the best in the series and i think you the reader should definately get it, especially if u r a mgs fan, its totally cool and much better than mgs and mgs2 together

5 out of 5  "Brilliant!" - 5 April 2005
Metal Gear Solid 3 is awesome! It is the 2nd best game on PS2 (San Andreas comes 1st). I feel that 5 stars is'nt enough! It deserves 6 stars at the least!
The graphics are brilliant, the surround sound is brilliant, the gameplay is brilliant, the cut scenes are brilliant, the story is brilliant, the boss battles are brilliant, all the characters are brilliant! Overall it's brilliant!
If you don't know which stealth game to get out of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory or Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater get Metal Gear Solid 3! It is so good that you must have it! You will love it! Just get it...NOW!

5 out of 5  "Great game, simple" - 31 March 2005
Id really like to write a long review but not much needs to be said about this masterpiece of a game.
It really is incredible in everything it does from sneaking up on an enemy for some CQC (close quaters combat) to blowing up store houses to deprive enemies of food and ammo to....well you get it, its amazing, why dont you own it yet....BUY IT!!!

5 out of 5  "Oh my God!!!!" - 30 March 2005
I was so psyched when I got this game that my brother actually texted me to tell me that it had arrived! This game is truly (in my oppinion) the greatest ever! And I haven't even completed it yet!!!
Firstly it has resorted more to the stealthiness of the first game and the sense of satisfaction when you get past a hard bit is enormous! This game gives itself the edge over most other "Stealth 'em ups" with its new Camo index. this shows you weather you are concealed like a needle in a hay-stack or like a bull in a china store, adn if you want to beat this game the fun (stealthy) way then you're gonna have to pay attention to this. Also the enemies aren't as stupid as in the first two where they had a vision range of about 20 feet although hiding in an expert spot camoed half way to hell and having a guard walk straight past you can make them look a bit stupid!! But fear not, for all you people that just love a shoot-out there are excellent boss fights against the "Cobra Unit" these battles will not only test you're ability to play the game but also you're brain in the way that following them and shooting wildly will get you nowhere! Also it's always fun blasting a corpse 10 feet with a high powered Shotgun or a Grenade. So, if you want intricate gameplay, a tough challenge adn 20 or so hours of pure enjoyment then you will be urging yourself to get this game!!!
