Editorial: What does the American Dream mean today?

For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don't.

Beginning with the 1997 release of the original Grand Theft Auto, the GTA series has been one of the most prolific, controversial and down right entertaining franchises in video games history. This pedigree of success guarantees that the highly anticipated eleventh game in the series, Grand Theft Auto IV, will garner at least as much attention if not more.

The Plot
Grand Theft Auto IV is a brand new adventure in the GTA universe following the experiences of Nikolai "Niko" Bellic, a new immigrant from an undisclosed eastern European country whose troubled pa st and the persuasion of his cousin Roman have brought him to the fictional Liberty City. Unfortunately, Niko's search for the American Dream and a much needed fresh start, hits an immediate snag when the rags to riches story Roman spun to pique Niko's interest is exposed as not only a complete fabrication, but a ploy to enlist Niko's well-known skills as a tough guy against the ample list of enemies clamouring for Roman's debt-ridden blood.

Because Roman is the only person Niko knows in Liberty City he begrudgingly accepts his role as Roman's protector despite the deception. But as time goes on Niko comes into his own, and his experience on the wrong side of the tracks proves more valuable than he could have ever imagined as he fights for survival and later supremacy on the crime ridden streets of Liberty City.

Game Environments
Based on several of the boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey, Liberty City, familiar to players of previous games in the series, has been entirely redesigned for GTA IV. Players can expect visible detail down to the weeds growing in the cracks in the sidewalk, cars and buildings of visibly different ages and a much greater level if verticality in the buildings and bridges that they are able to explore as Niko moves through the city streets. In addition, pedestrians in GTA IV are much more realistic. No longer simply moving cardboard cut-outs, these NPCs are intelligent, modern, human representations that laugh, cry, eat, drink, use cell phones and ATMs, and talking amongst themselves regardless of Niko's interaction with them.

Gameplay
Historically GTA games have focused heavily on mission-based play, requiring successful completion of fixed tasks in order for players to progress through the game, but this has changed to a great extent in GTA IV. Players will experience an entirely new and exciting emphasis centred on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting not only in an increased sense of realism, but more interesting and unrestricted gameplay.

Features
Aside from the car jacking and a detailed city environment here are the new features for GTA IV:

  • Improved combat system - Now you can use cover and also a target lock system, which allows you to take out targets with greater ease and accuracy. Plus, you can engage in some hand-to-hand combat if you can't get your hands on a piece quick enough.
  • Cell phone - Not just for basic phone calls anymore. Use your in-game cell phone to receive missions via SMS, snap photos, and ZiT (tag) songs that can be downloaded exclusively on Amazon.com/mp3.
  • Free time - In between missions you can take

5 out of 5  "Amazing piece of work and a contender for the Game of the Year!" - 1 May 2008
The game is superb, i managed to get a go on my friends PS3. Highly recommended but by all means DO NOT buy this game off Clearance-Games here on Amazon. I have been waiting since Tuesday on release of the game and still have not recieved it! I dont think they understood the meaning of the word Pre-Order im so desperate to play properly :(.

5 out of 5  "GREAT GAME , GREAT SERVICE!!!" - 1 May 2008
to start off with i would like to Thank amazon for dispatching GTA on sunday and arrived on the day of launch for GTA (tuesday) Great service thank you! also the game is fantastic it was very well created and there is many many things to do, graphics are so realistic! overall 5/5 best game on PS3 to date!

5 out of 5  "Just pure fun" - 5 May 2008
This game is just pure fun. I haven't got any problems with bugs
or any freezing...
The multiplayer is the best ever and the map is so big!
this is the game of the year (maybe game of the century)

5 out of 5  "To the unlucky few" - 4 May 2008
It's a shame to hear of some people experiencing bugs with the game. I'm playing it on a 60gb PS3 and haven't had a single problem (don't know if it's a problem with the different PS3s?).
What I will say is that it seems Rockstar are soon to release a patch in order to fix these problems.

The game itself is nothing short of magnificent, I always know a game is special when I can't get the girlfriend to let me have a go! Don't listen to those who reviewed without playing beyond the first few missions, the experience goes rapidly from strength to strength. The large scale shoot-outs are a particular highlight.

5 out of 5  "Simply an incredible 3d virtual world..." - 3 May 2008
I've been playing it for 2 days now in 'free roam' mode, and wow! this game IS the most detailed and interactive 3d environment ever. I'm gobsmacked by some of the sights Ive seen. Driving the speedboat around the dock areas is very realistic, and the water and wave effects are top notch. Also, flying the helicopter over the city is amazingly realistic and detailed, and copter crashes are crazy and lifelike. GTA 1V is far more immersive than the previous GTA, there's no comparison.

All that amazing detail must come at a price tho, and that price is occasional low fps for a lot of people (mainly during car chases involving lots of cop cars). Also, there are annoying glitches - such as when Niko's head and body partially disappears into walls etc if you bump him into stuff.
But I can forgive all of that in exchange for having the privelage of exploring this awesome new computer-generated world that RockStar have created.

PS: I dont particularly like the sleazy/sex/drugs and prostitution theme of this game, and so I havent bothered with any of the missions, only the first part so I could get the mobile phone to key in the cheats:)

5 out of 5  "A great game by Rockstar but always room for improvement." - 3 May 2008
This is a fantastic game by Rockstar but although there are 1 or 2 minorish problems i still give this 5 stars.

The Good: The graphics are incredible, really capturing the movement of every character and pedestrian.
The buildings and definition of the and texture is superb. Glint of the sun refelcted on buildings.
Realistic weather. Rain, thunderstorms, sun, cloud the graphics change to adapt to the weather.
There is great detail added to the cars for example satnav in every car, search police records in police cars. Interactive headlights now feature.
The police are much more realistic and so are chaces.
Pedestrians can grass on you. Parked cars are no longer easily accessible. Thanks to the graphics implemented in GTA 4, Nico has to break into the parked cars and hotwire it to make his escape. Pedestrians can now call the police.
Graphics: Each character in the game including pedestrians have seperate motions. While driving, you can see Nico turn the wheel, beep the horn etc.
Mini-games for example bowling and mimi golf.
Go to a bar and have a few drinks to test out drunk driving.
Don't have a car? Never fear. You can now call a taxi to give you a ride whever you need or get your cousin Roman to send you a free cab.
For the first time, Nico can ride the trains but not drive them.

The Bad: The map is smaller than San Andreas which Rockstar said is because of the extra detail to buildings and roads. This is not entirely true. The number of buildings which you can enter are very restricted.
Clothes: For a modernis game one expects the character to have a sense of style. Clothes available are very 50's and 60's style.

The Missions: Very good and detailed. Fun filled game. Action packed.

The Bug: Reports came in from GTA players on the PS3. After the first few cartoony images, the game would freeze. Most gamers went to extremes and were completely formatting their hard drive/deleting save game data.

THE SOLUTION: IF YOU CONNECT TO THE INTERNET, IN THE PS3 MAIN MENU (XMB) GO TO NETWORK SETTINGS AND DISABLE INTERNET CONNECTION. ROCKSTAR ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND ARE WORKING ON A BUG FIX!!

So hopefully this review has given you a good idea of what to expect in GTA IV on the PS3.

Graphics:9.5/10
Gameplay:9/10
Missions:10/10
Audio:10/10

Happy Gaming!

5 out of 5  "Out Of This World!" - 3 May 2008
First of all, I am sick of seeing bad reviews based on gameplay. It's pathetic, they hype up the game and are immediately disappointed, when they have no right to be when the game is so good. As for the game freezing, I have to say, it does happen. However, I believe there is a patch that will be released to fix all problems.

Anyway, the game is amazing, graphics are superb, and that is without a HD connection. The game itself is a lot different to previous titles, based more on real-life physics rather than the "cartoony" feel of past games.
The main character, Niko, will now interact with objects in many different ways due to the engine in which the game runs on. He may knock down, push aside or just walk past pedestrians.
There is now 3 different ways Niko moves on foot, there is a normal walk, a jog (by holding X) and a sprint (Tapping X).

The car system is possibly the most different thing about the game. People have marked the game down for this, purely because they haven't got the hang of it yet (To be expected after just 4 or five days), the car system is largely based on how you'd drive a car in real life. You can't just drive round a corner at top speed, you have to break everso slightly.
Staying with cars, you can no longer steal a parked car by opening the door and driving off. Niko will now have to smash the window (with many different animations) open the lock and hotwire the car to start it. This may seem too much, but, Niko must be skilled, as it doesn't take too long.

The wanted level system has also been revamped. When you have wanted level stars, you have to escape a certain radius (Size depends on how many stars you have) and police cars are represented on the map by a dot with spinning lights, helicopters are represented by spinning blades and boats by just dots. This will help you to decide which way to go to escape.
There are also many other features whilst driving. If you crash in a car into a solid object at full speed, you will find yourself being thrown out the window. When riding a bike, you will fly off and find yourself a splat on the floor near to death.

Niko now has many methods of communication. You have a mobile phone and the use of an internet service. The mobile phone can't be used to get missions, set up dates or to just listen to someones answering machine message.
You can also type in your own numbers. If you phone 911, you get the emergancy services. Police, Paramedics and firefighters are all on standby. If you phone the paramedics, they will heal you if you're hurt.
You can now hail or phone a taxi to take you somewhere.
The internet service is mainly for using the email service, again, used for setting up missions mostly. You can also find dates on the web.

The weapon system, again, has been revamped. There are two aiming types. Free-aim and target lock.
The aim is represented by a small white dot.

The story is also supposed to be very, very good, and from what've played so far, I'd back that statement.

As you can see, the game has so many features, som I haven't even mentioned. I would give this give 9.5/10 It is seriously a must-buy.

5 out of 5  "game of the year?..." - 8 May 2008
this is by far the best game that has come out on the ps3 so far. They have maximised what the ps3 can do, online play can be up to 16players,
the city is much larger than previous gta titles, i suggest u get in a helicopter and head for sky, admire the view and the size of the city then come back at night and do it all again!
the use of the mobile phone is superb, when u enter multiplayer mode u can send messages to ur firends to invite them to join your game and in the game u can call your friends via the mobile (headset needed), and much more...
the only game that cold be better than this is Metal Gear Solid 4???...

4 out of 5  "A new era has begun...apparently." - 12 May 2008
Being one of the three hundred reviewers previously mentioned, I felt it necessary to have a good crack at GTA IV first, and listen to some other perspectives before largely slating this game, which was what I was about to do.

Because, initially, I found myself particularly underwhelmed with GTA IV. I seemed to spend the whole time (first night) slothing around with Niko's annoying cousin Roman, saving his skin and popping off his enemies with little conscience.

You see, the problem with the GTA series, is that the 'sims on wheels, guns and drugs' style of gaming that I've become accustomed to has been, largely, stripped. It is about Niko, not you. You can't go around buying which houses YOU like, you can't go around customising cars the way YOU like, and you can't have the girlfriends YOU like. You have to start (and finish) things in an unceremoniously grotty manner, and according (largely) to how Niko would do things. Even his European accent can at some stages make you want to grate your teeth. It seems to be case of better technical depth, in exchange for the experience.

This put me off for quite some time after I bought it and, as I'd done with San Andreas, nearly sold it after only a short time playing it.

Another area I found to be somewhat irritating was the number of people Niko meets. He seems, initially, to be just stuck with only with a few, annoying, useless allies, and then all of a sudden you get invaded with all of these characters and their life stories.

The shooting system, in my opinion, is improved from the previous titles, but nothing revolutionary. However, it is still satisfying to pick a precise shot with the PSG-1, and even more so when you take down a chopper with an RPG-7. But in the long run, I found it to be, for the most part, somewhat monotonous. Mission after mission of going into buildings and wiping out lots of trash-talking bad boys who think that their inconsistent trigger finger is going to out-gun your M4 left me feeling a bit deflated. I didn't know what I was expecting, but what seemed like more of the same with better graphics and no parachuting wasn't what I was hoping for.

I found myself simply pushing to finish it and move on; and I still haven't quite got over that.

But I have learned get over most of my jitters about this game, and to appreciate the finer things in GTA IV, such as the depth of Liberty City; whilst I feel a bit 'boxed in' compared to San Andreas, it is simply exhaustive. It must've taken, what seemed like, forever to get every shop and every street light positioned and ready for exploration.

I have also learned to appreciate the delicacies of the SIXAXIS function, and the handling that feels much less arcade-y, and much deeper and simulative, and yet still quite fun. It is actually quite rewarding to burn rubber and escape a three-star manhunt.

The story, whilst in a generally more linear game, does actually seem to leave more room for the player to input themselves into, which is strange, but also a comfort from a fear of a do-this-do-that style of game. There are a few great twists that can really hook you in, and which is one of this game's strengths. The characters have depth, some are irritating (which I feel contributed to my lethargy towards this game), some you look up to and some you can't help but just lol at. It seems to run on a similar engine to GTA III, but it's much better, and more malleable.

I guess the underlying point of this review is to point out that GTA IV is what it is, and (if you're like me) it's up to you to come to the table and enjoy yourself. If you are looking to hit the gym, order salad and have a little you run around the new Liberty city, then you are likely to be let down. If you're hoping to spend most of your time playing with a vast library of toys and side quests, you are likely to be let down.

But I've hardly stopped playing this game since I got it. With brilliant presentation, a new next-generation experience via an epic story on an epic stage, Rockstar have done alright.

4 out of 5  "GTA IV" - 16 May 2008
Ok, a lot of people have been comparing this heavily to San Andreas which is fair enough as they are in the same series of games. The most notible comparisons being that of the things that have been left out, i.e taking over businesses etc. Although i agree with this, in Rockstar's defence they have had to build this game for a brand new platform. I think this is a very good first GTA game on the PS3. I try and look at it from the point of view that Rockstar have effectively had to start again. When you think about it, San Andreas showed that Rockstar had clearly got to grips with programming the PS2 as it was coming to the end of its lifespan. Because the PS3 is brand new, i'm sure Rockstar have had to get to grips with programming the game for a Blue Ray disc not to mention getting the game on both platforms (PS3 and XBox).
I think its also worth noting that they probably have plans to make a few more of these games and there is always an incredible amount of pressure on them to make it better each time. This debut game has given a bit of room to improve and future games i'm sure will be brilliant. Lets face it, there can't be many people that didn't find this game fun to play. If you did get too involved by the hype, thats your own fault isn't it!
All GTA fans should by this game as it still has all of the elements that make this series of games great and more.
