4 out of 5  "Great game!" - 27 November 2007
Now this game is behind Need For Speed Most Wanted for me as that was more of a free roam game and brilliant the way the cops were involved. This game is just all about picking a race and doing it to get a record and money which you need to upgrade your cars performance otherwise you arent going to be moving to different zones. This game is more based on actual track races on proper tracks and not the main street of a major city where other public cars not as good as you are based which get in the way but i kinda miss those. The only thing really wrong with this game is the fact that the cars are called blueprints! WTF! i didnt get it at the start but now i get it and i find oit really good. but still blueprint? Still though a great game but not amazing!

3 out of 5  "It's a Racing Game, That's all..." - 17 December 2007
I haven't really looked at what other people are saying about this game but I've rated it a 3 star game...It's a racing game really that's all we can say about it..The graphics are a definate step up from previous need for speed games, but if anything it's just got more repetative. The camera has a slight, slight!, shakey effect when you're going such great speeds to give you a faster effect. There is nothing I can say you need to buy this game for in the plus side. If I ever decided I wanted this game next to my PS3 i'd visit eBay. And try to get it for £20! - So if you want this game please don't pay £40 for it!

Hopefully this has helped you!

4 out of 5  "Rent it first" - 27 December 2007
This is a lot different to Most Wanted and Carbon, so rent it for a couple of nights. I did as I was unsure about the dramatic changes, but I think EA pulled it off.

There is no free roam or police in this. But the cars and tracks do look really good. But the cars now show damage. On the demo, I totaled my car on the side of a Speed race and was barrel rolling down the track. In the smoke to AI cars behind me braked and swerved to avoid my wreckage, before I came to a rest on the side.

Just try before you buy. If you don't like this then have a look at Burnout Paradise

2 out of 5  "Need for Bug Testing: Pro Street" - 15 January 2008
There's not a lot to say that hasn't already been said about this game, so I will be brief. I would like to highlight a few items that keep this game from greatness (in fairness it's not that bad).

The graphics are good, and all the sounds etc. are spot on. However, a few items of concern are as follows: There are a few glitches, the most noticeable of which is that some of the cars have a habit of "jumping" around when lining up to race (literally bouncing like they have hydraulics).

My main concern however, having been through all of the career and got to the final "event" is: not being able to beat Ryo Wantanabe. The game actually cheats to stop you even being able to overtake him, allow me to explain:

I won the grip kings car (BMW M3) and changed the blueprint to "speed", I then added back all the stage 4 parts and played with the final gear ratio so that the M3 tops 210 and beats anything the AI has to offer. However, when racing Ryo, the M3 gets left behind his 4WD Evo off the line but then as I breeze up behind him, I suddenly found myself limited to around 140/150mph.... The only way I found to stop this was to use Nitrous to pass him, then the problem goes away, this also appears to be the case for a couple of other events.

Whilst I also, initially like the "total" system and the fact that damage remains during (and after) race days, there are some desert races where despite having a 4WD super-evo I found that just letting one tyre creep (even slightly) onto the dirt resulted in a catastrophic flip (instead of the 4WD/LSD sorting out the lack of traction like it would in real life) totalling my car.... This prove highly irritating after the tenth attempt of driving fast and in the end I overtook everyone on the first lap then was forced to drive like I was out on a Sunday morning taking in the sights just to get that particular race out of the way.

Despite the negative comments (and unforgivable glitch with Ryo) I did enjoy this game and kept going back `til I'd got all the cars and dominated all events (except the final). If there's a patch correcting these issues I'd recommend this game, if not, then I'd steer clear.

1 out of 5  "Need for Speed?" - 22 February 2008
First thing I asked when playing this game is "what happened to need for speed?" If you're a Need for Speed fan then this game will disappoint coz it just is not Need for Speed, where are the cops, the street racing. Its just not Need for Speed anymore. I don't recommend this game.

3 out of 5  "HANDLES LIKE A BAR OF SOAP" - 27 March 2008
i have played the demo of this only as i wouldnt buy it after never playing a decent driving game from ea why should things have changed..could they...maybe the developers have put the effort into the driving model for once.
the short answer is no,either that or the ea american team have only ever driven 70's cadillacs and think that all cars drive that way.this game is so obviously a port from the stuttering frame rate to the ropey graphics which look like they were ported from the pc 5 years ago.load this up after gt5 prologue and it looks like a cheeky burglar has swapped your ps3 for a ps2.
last of all as a driving game lives or dies by how good the actual driving part is and although this doesnt seem to bother a lot of kids who dont know the difference between rear wheel drive and front wheel drive, mid engine, front engine, oversteer, understeer power oversteer etc..... it bothers the rest of us!!! and god its painful to watch a nissan gtr understeer round a corner at 30mph,its also unforgivable and typical of the tripe that ea come up with! if you want arcadey buy burnout,if you want realistic buy gt5 prologue or dirt,if you want rubbish then buy this.

4 out of 5  "NFS grows up" - 26 November 2007
The creators of the new 'Need for Speed: Pro Street' must of had games like Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport in mind when developing this year's probable Christmas No 1 game, as the style and gameplay is much more realistic and serious than previous years' Undergrounds, Most Wanted and Carbon games.

Rather than going for the own the city street races in Career Mode like in the previous games, this time it has a series of race days where you have to compete and finish various races such as Grip races, 1/4 and 1/2 mile Drag races, Drift challendes and Time Trials to procede to the next day. Each are fairly challenging in their own way and require practice on each to gets the skills to be able to come first in the Career Mode. In multiplayer and practice modes you can create your own race days where you can choose which types of races, cars and tracks are used and then take on your friends via splitscreen or system link. There's tonnes of top cars and plenty of tracks to keep you interested.

The controls take a while to get used to with either up on the right stick or R2 to accelerate and down on the right stick or L2 to brake, as opposed to the default X and Square controls on the previous games when on the PS2. As Circle is used for the Nitrous burst, it can get a little fiddily when using the right stick as the accelerate/brake controls, however this is the more user-friendly control out of the two when it comes to cornering and drifting. It's also a shame that the Six Axis tilt sensor wasn't used at all.

The graphics are pretty good, especially through HDMI, but are no where near as slick or smooth as some of the other racing games on the PS3, such as Ridge Racer 7, GTHD or Motorstorm. The effects and backgrounds do look very nice, but the cars sometimes look a little blocky. The soundtrack isn;t great, but what do you expect from a NFS game?

Overall, Pro Street is great fun with plenty of hours gameplay involved within the Career Mode and endless hours in the multiplayer modes. The controls aren't the best on the PS3 version but it doesn't stop it from being an excellent game that most racing game fans should enjoy. It's good to see that the NFS series has finally gotten rid of it's boy racer image (well, almost) and has gone for the more grown-up appearance, using events and legal races. Although I do miss the police pursuits that made Most Wanted such a good game. This is a decent enough game that should keep you busy until next year when Burnout Paradise and the next Gran Turismo game are due out.

1 out of 5  "Really Disappointed !" - 28 December 2007
I wish I'd read the reviews before I asked for this as an Xmas present. They've taken the best bits out from the game, e.g. the racing around a city, to racing round a track. BORING ! Don't bother.

3 out of 5  "A Missed Opportunity" - 2 December 2007
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. The best feature of NfS games was driving around large city maps, being chased by the cops and escaping from them. EA have ditched this free-roaming aspect in favour of a straight track racing game which irritatingly insists on how "cool" and "street" it is. Street it ain't -quite literally.

The game engine is not too bad, and the cars are easy to set up and control. However, the sheer amount of driving you will have to do to reach the Four Kings of the various disciplines -not to mention final boss Ryu- is offputting, and a clear attempt by EA to stretch the life of the game. The AI of NPC cars is pretty poor, as they move out the way for you to get through. Furthermore, the frame rate drops quite a bit on the PS3 version, especially when playing online.

Of course, the aformentioned online portions of the game will elongate the life of the experience, but the lack of free roaming and cops, plus the annoyingly "in your face" attitude and welter of advertising means it's a big missed opportunity.

5 out of 5  "A daring change that works" - 7 January 2008
It's true (as stated by some excentric reviewers) that this game doesnt follow the same style as its predecessors. No there aren't any police chaces nor is there a free roam option on the city streets. If they wanted to buy a game expecting that then they should have bought another copy of 'Carbon'. This is a new game and assuming you know what you are getting is foolish.

The older games did have a certain charm but the series is called 'Need for Speed' not 'Hurry up and get away from the police'!

This game has plenty of speed. The story has a way of making you feel it is a realistic 'next step' for a street racing offender.
The ability to tune and style the car makes for a much better 'Garage' experience. In the previous games you could just slap a body kit on your ride and lower the suspension to make it look better. Doing that on this game will have effects like the aero dynamics and handling of the car. It isn't all about looks. This appeals to me personally as my hobby is to modify high performance cars.

In my opinion any fan of the series, like myself, will not be dissapointed in this title. Dont let the negative reviews hold you back.
