4 out of 5  "On the prow again " - 29 August 2008
Ok here we go again tigerWoods 09 is again trying to create the most realistic golf sim out their, i have to say i have not seen any better, but when you have the biggest name franchise its easy to stuff the competition. Ok lets start with whats new , you now have the advice of tigers real life coach hank henney, who is quite useful maybe to new comers of this game but old hands know what it takes to progress their golfer to full potential. New to the game is the way you can now customise your clubs, you can go for all out power but this gives you less control or you can set them so you hit the sweet spot evry time , i went for a power over precision set up myself, Graphically there is very little inprovement to 08 which is kind of disapointing as i wanted glorious HD to be pushed to the limit but its not,the commentators have also changed, no more D Faherty but Sam Torrance and kelly are ok,courses are pretty much a mix of fantasy and real live events, the tour is the best feature off line, but changes to online now mean you dont have to wait for others to play there shots you can simultaneously play so thats good, online is great by the way if you have an ethernet account, Tiger challenge is simple to complete and is the best way to get your stats up, anyhow overall i think the changes to learning and increasing stats is good, hank henney is tiresome after a while constantly saying the samething over and over, yes its still the best golf game but its really a disapointment in the way its not improved since 08, thats why i can only give it 4 stars.

3 out of 5  "Great game but still could be better!" - 24 September 2008
Once again EA have delivered a very realistic yet fun golf sim game with new added features, however, I can't help but feel that once again it comes up short of what it could be.

I played (and reviews) TW08 when I bought that and befoe I played this I rented and tried...and decided not to buy on that basis.

The game itself is very good and fans of the franchise will still be able to pick up and play and newcomers will have coaching in the game to get them up to speed. The customisation of clubs looks nice and several old features are there again for us to enjoy.

However, while the game is good, it isn't anything new or different. Sure there is a little bit of window dressing to justify another version that is the must have latest and greatest, but at it's heart it is not really any different than the last 2 or 3 versions.

My biggest problem though, is the graphics and choice of courses. Call me selfish but I expect to have something on my wizz-bang machine capable of running the deathstar that is a little bit different and extra than what I could have had on my PS2 before I upgraded. I have been left with a hollow feeling that this is simply the same game ported over to a different platform witht he pologons turned up slightly.

There is no feeling of 'WOW - this is great', the graphics still look OK don't get me wrong but not the wonder of HD that I thought I would be getting with my PS3. And no extra courses, golfers or anything different despite having all that extra space to utilise on the Bluray disc?? I guess the next gen consoles are either going to have to make do with companies taking the easy option until the PS2 and original Xbox go so out of fashion that they aren't making the games for those any more before we truly get manufacturers making the most of the new technology.

Maybe next years will be better???

5 out of 5  "EA got it just right" - 29 August 2008
Year after Year, EA release a TW game and each year us gamers have to settle for just a few new courses and maybe some new courses and also maybe 1 or 2 "gimmick" features. So what's different about Tiger Woods 09 that would make the golf veteran come back or make newcomers more interested than before? First of all, Tiger Woods Coach Hank Haney is put into the mix, At the start of the game, he'll assess your attributes based on your first few shots. Then after each and every round of golf, your skills go up or down depending on how well you do. This actually works really well, it forces you to play well all the time even if you are 10 shots ahead of the pack in PGA Tour Mode. Another new feature, is the Club Tuner, now this allows the golfer to tune their clubs to their own needs and what suits them the most. Seeing as you can now add probably up to 60 yards more to your drives with this new feature, you may think it makes the game easier than before, well not exactly. Each hole now provides a different challenge. On a reachable par 4, do you go for it and risk maybe being in the rough or the bunker, or do you play it safe and make sure you have a close approach? If you chose the first option, then doing this a number of times per round could severely decrease your stats.

So, Dynamic attributes is an absolutely ingenious feature and it works extremely well. Now finally, another great feature is the Online Simultaneous Play. Now, when playing online, this is optional in Stroke play. Whilst playing you still see everybody's shots and it's basically you against everybody else. It takes much less time than before. In 08, it took 40 minutes to play a 4 way stroke play and now it only takes 10 minutes. When you are not playing simultaneously or playing a team game, you still see other people take their shots but you can no longer see what club they're hitting, how much loft they're putting or even what power they're putting on. So this is much better than before, as it doesn't allow anybody to copy anybody's shots.

Overall, I give the game a 5/5, the graphics are much better than 08, the water looks sensational. I haven't really got that much to say wrong about 09 as it really is that good, which is something I normally don't say about EA. This year though, they got it just right.

3 out of 5  "Ok but more of the same really" - 30 August 2008
Ok there's the new features like the club-tuning, coaching & simultaneous on-line play and these are all good but other than that the game is basically the same as ever. No noticable improvement in graphics for me, game play exactly the same including the clumsy system of gauging distance ("so should I set this putt to 10 feet & add 50% overspin(?) or 20 feet & hit it 60% power or...."), the funny little chip shot option that feels like it's been imported from an entirely different golf game, the miraculous ability to control the flight of the golf ball AFTER you've hit it. Also (I could be wrong here, maybe it's just my perception) the thing that made TW08 an improvement over previous versions is that they'd made it more of a challenge to hit the ball straight (you know, like in real golf) but it seems that they've reverted to the TW07 "every-tee-shot-predictably-straight-down-the-middle-yawn" model, even on the hard levels.

I still think TW is a good game but I'd like to see them develop and experiment with the actual on-course gameplay a bit instead of putting all the innovation into gimmickey aspects like club-tuning etc. I'm not comparing like-for-like obviously but a sports-sim like Top-Spin tennis has got it spot on, gameplay is intuitive, simple but still challenging with all the subtleties of the real game. TW feels a bit clumsy by comparison.

1 out of 5  "This is becoming a joke...I give up." - 5 October 2008
Ok this is going to sound harsh but it needs to be said.
This years tiger is a step too far.
After changing developers after the pretty good 07 version this game has become a glitch laden, bug ridden programme.
Last years game was really awful,as the new team seemed to be adding their touches to the game engine.
However instead of building on the good framework of the 07 version they have turned this into a mess.
This is the team responsible for the dire outlaw golf series and its obvious they haven't learned a great deal since those games.
So without being too critical these are the good and bad points about this years game.
Good points are......
Wentworth course.
Some nice clothes to dress your golfer in.
........Ok now i'm struggling.
Bad things are....
Horrible slowdown which not only looks bad it affects the gameplay as well, use the 3 click swing and you will see what i mean,it judders so much that at times its impossible to use.
Poor a.i which makes the game too,easy..until it decides to cheat you.
Graphics are poor, everything looks fake and cartoony and this year the golfers especially are awful,Paul casey looks like lee westwood and John daly is so poor it's laughable
The models were pretty good in 07,not perfect but really not too shabby,so why change to something that's worse.
Club tuner is a complete waste of time, just hit the ball staight!
Performance coach is another worthless addition with drills that become very tedious, this also suffers from poor programming as you can really do well in game but your skills will still drop.
Commentary has at last been changed this year, but they say the same thing from the same script that was written years ago.
So once again this is another missed opportunity, why bother changing the announcers if your not going to change the script.
However the worst thing i came across while playing was i was up against john daly, who hit his ball into the water, you heard it splash and sam torrence said its in the water, but on his next shot he was on the green and he won the hole in 4,the a.i failing to even realise he had hit it in the water.....Rubbish!
It really isn't good enough, and yet every year they expect you to pay ££££s for the game.
In all honesty i feel the only way this franchise will ever improve is to start afresh with a brand new engine, and also drop the poor development team as well.
I would glady wait 2 years for a good solid version with great gameplay than play this rubbish year in year out.
It's really sad because ive played these since the megadrive days, but i very much doubt i will ever buy again.

4 out of 5  "Great game BUT what happened to the Dualshock Vibration?" - 29 August 2008
This is a good game, better than last year and easier to play. There are more courses and innovative new features like the club tuner.

I have just one gripe and this is why I give the game 4 stars instead of 5.

The game is supposed to be Dualshock compatible BUT the only time you get any sort of vibration is playing the "play now" part of the game. Everything else that you play no matter what you are playing (be a tournament or mini-game etc) has no vibration. I know this is a relatively minor point but you would have thought it had been checked prior to the game being released.

No doubt a patch will be available soon to download to fix the error....

Come on EA Sports - get this sorted and it really will be a 5-star game.

4 out of 5  "So real" - 23 October 2008
I just got the game today. Must say its loads better than the TW 07 which I've played for months. Just a couple of issues: both games stick or hang for a second one some tee shots, which spoils the illusion.

The other issue is, I cant find the auto-save function, despite following the manual. Oh well, great game, amazing graphics, all the same.

5 out of 5  "Real Suprise for non-golf Fan" - 20 October 2008
My friend got this game... I said yeah I'll play. Thought it would last 5 minutes then back to something else...

What a suprise. We play it every night now, one on one. One or two things need changing- eg no playoff on 2 player if you draw a match- but generally this is excellent.

4 out of 5  "decent trees at last" - 7 October 2008
i like tiger woods 09.for me this is the best one yet,the trees look half decent finally and the water looks great also.the rest of the graphics are good but not as good as the ps3 can do but maybe that's because ea are lazy or it's a cross platform game who knows.
the main thing is it's fun in career mode, online or with others and the way your stats go up and up as you get better but go down a bit if you have a bad game i like a lot.
for all the things they could have done i still love the game, next time would be good if they added some extra stuff like your own golf house, golf carts that you can race against your mates and crank up the graphics a bit and i will be well chuffed,as it is i give it 8/10.

4 out of 5  "tiger 2009 PS3...much better than first impressions." - 4 October 2008
Tiger 09 has a nice control system with an option of a 3-click swing for beginners. The harder levels are challenging with the wind making a big impression with difficult pin positions. The attribute system where you increase your skill by improving areas of your gameplay over the rounds can be frustrating, but encourages and rewards calculated accurate play. The shortgame attribute is particularly difficult to maximise on the harder difficulties and I think EA has this element wrong. Putting is interesting and fluent and fun as is hitting a big one off the tee. Courses and graphics are good (better than first impressions, the lighting etc is fantastic).
Online play is hit and miss, there is alot of connection issues with the servers etc with this PS3 game. When you connected in to other players ok then it is great fun with 4-ball, simultaneous stroke play etc etc.
This is one to get if you a tiger game fan...beware of loosing all your money in the online mode...theres sharks out there.
